Two empowered moms building happier, healthier communities through data.
In September 2022, only 20% of K-5 students in Wayland, MA received a spot in the district's after school care program. Turns out, many districts across the country were facing the same uphill battle with post-pandemic staffing shortages. Parents for After School Solutions (PASS) began as a grass roots effort to address the after school care crisis.
A committee of 7 determined parents came together to organize the needs and voices of the community. Through a positive, solutions-oriented approach, the PASS committee worked alongside town and district leadership to establish two new after school programs in the span of 7 months, increasing student access by over 75% for the start of the 2023-24 school year.
When we asked families about PASS's impact on their lives, their feedback told us we were onto something bigger. By relieving the stress of after school care, we had significantly improved the mental health of our community. We decided we didn't want to stop at after school care. We were wanted to use the data on happiness to definitively improve our community's mental and physical health.
And The PASS Project was born.

"Karen and Amanda have spent endless hours on solutions for the incredibly problematic lack of after-school care for working parents in Wayland. Their positivity, hard work and dedication to finding solutions is a huge relief to many. THANK YOU!"
"THANK YOU. Last year was a frustrating process to have to navigate childcare with our kindergartener. We had just moved to Wayland and were second guessing this move because of all the additional barriers that now lay ahead of us in order to continue working full time."
"My Kindergarten daughter LOVES the new program—perhaps even more thank school! I can’t imagine having her home with a nanny or babysitter each day and not having that social interaction."
"Thank you for all your work on the new after school programs. I'm in chemotherapy for breast cancer and we desperately needed support. This makes such a difference for our family."
"We are extremely grateful for the huge undertaking by PASS to fix the broken after school care system of Wayland. We came to Wayland to get our children in better schools, only to later find out that there is close to no chance of getting into programs. Thank you!"
"I literally can’t put into words the degree to which the PASS advocate work has changed our lives. We are so, so appreciative."
