What is the pass project?
The Problem
In September 2022, only 20% of K-5 students in Wayland, MA received a spot in the district's after school care program. Turns out, many districts across the country were facing the same uphill battle with post-pandemic staffing shortages. Parents for After School Solutions (PASS) began as a grass roots effort to address the after school care crisis.
The Solution
A committee of 7 determined parents came together to organize the needs and voices of the community. Through a positive, solutions-oriented approach, the PASS committee worked alongside town and district leadership to establish two new after school programs in the span of 7 months, increasing student access by over 75% for the start of the 2023-24 school year.
What's Next?
When we asked families about PASS's impact on their lives, their feedback told us we were onto something bigger. By relieving the stress of after school care, we had significantly improved the mental health of our community. We decided we didn't want to stop at after school care. We were wanted to use the data on happiness to definitively improve our community's mental and physical health.
And The PASS Project was born.
Karen and Amanda are incredible partners for the Wayland Rec Department. They dug into the logistics and finances of the transportation needed to connect the schools to our programs, and got all the approvals squared away in just a few months.

PASS solved a major problem affecting hundreds of children in Wayland. These achievements aren't just about after school care. They delivered enriching opportunities for students to learn and create alongside their peers outside of school hours. Social engagement like this is sorely needed in 2023.
